Daily Regimen

After hunting a lot for the factors responsible for the diseases, the modern medicine has now arrived at a conclusion that, the changing life style is really the main culprit for diseases. It’s really amazing that, this is the fact well known according to Ayurveda 3-4 thousand years before. Logically speaking the way one lives, consumes food, thinks and behaves has its reflection over his life and health. Actually there is no need to explain this. Unfortunately instead of searching of causative factors in ourselves, we are trying to search these in surrounding, such as pollution, infection etc. Of course these are also important factors, but then if the sole attention goes to such external factors, we even can’t think of ourselves with this angle. Once we realize this attitude and try to think in this direction, we may really come out with things, which we never would have thought of as, causative factors for the diseases. It’s our experience that, with proper correction in these factors, one can get rid off one’s health problems, even without any medication. For example, eat only when you are hungry”, is a very simple but important rule. Violation of this rule gives rise to many diseases even of complicated nature and prolonged illnesses. But since this fact is unknown, it remains neglected even for several years and the person has to pay a penalty in the form of a disease.

The daily regimen comprises so many factors such as waking up early in the morning, bowel habits,  cleaning of teeth and tongue, exercise, massaging with oils, food, nature of work, nasya, anjana, sadvritta etc. Here are a few tips for the maintenance of health according to Ayurveda, considering the daily regimen.

  1. Early to bed and waking up early.
  2. Regular bowel habits once or twice a day. Well formed stools without foul smell, no flatulence. If any thing out of this is missing, then you need to rectify your digestion.
  3. Regular Exercise. Surya Namaskara i.e. sun salute is a good combination of yogasana and exercise. You can choose some kind of exercise plus yogasana to keep yourself fit.
  4. Regularities in food intakes. Eat only when you are hungry. Stop eating little before your feeling of satisfaction. Avoid yogurt at dinner, don’t consume frequently during lunch also. Avoid combination of milk with fruit / sour / salt. Try to cook fresh food every day for the two meals. Eat with a calm and quite mind in a pleasant atmosphere. Concentrate on taking food only, while eating. Don’t watch TV or listen radio / cassette or read or chitchat while eating. Eating is an important part of your life and you should honor it wholeheartedly to maintain health. Avoid too sweet (like chocolates), too sour ( like lemon, yogurts, tomatoes etc.), too spicy and too salty.
  1. Have regular full body massage with oils (sesame / olive / almonds etc.) at least once or twice in a week. Our body is a complex machine  and needs regular oiling and servicing. So care of the body and especially of the “ Vata Dosha” by massage, is a must in such a way.
  1. Cleaning the teeth should be done regularly once in the morning and then after eating any thing. The most natural way to clean the teeth is to use a twig of a tree with a bitter or astringent taste like Nimb (azadiracta indica ).You can chew it, convert it into a brush by chewing, clean the teeth with this brush and then throw it away. Use fresh twig every time. This is a custom followed even today in the villages in India. To use toothpaste powder with Ayurvedic herbs will be the next choice.
  1. Sadvritta : This comprises general rules for good conduct e.g. refrain yourself from any kind of addiction e.g. cigarette, alcohol, drugs etc. Be always neatly dressed, smiling etc. Give respect to respectable persons. Be generous. Be helpful. Be well-wisher of everything in the universe. Always think on proper lines to keep yourself happy. Be honest. Work honestly to earn money in a proper way. There are so many such simple rules, which make your life happy and healthy.
